December 5, 2011
A string of crashes involving school buses and tractor-trailers in the Mississippi-area have left several people dead and dozen injured. Channel 3 News reported the latest crash after a school bus collided with a logging truck in Winona, Mississippi.
The accident occurred shortly after 7:00 in the morning at the intersection of US Highway 82 and Lodi Road. The bus was t-boned by the tractor-trailer as it passed through the intersection. The impact caused the bus to flip before coming to rest on its side. Witnesses said that all 20 students aboard the bus were injured and are being treated at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital, while three other requiring more serious treatment were taken to University Medical Center in Jackson.
The crash came in the wake of a similar incident that occurred earlier in the year, in which three people were killed and 10 others were injured when a school bus and tractor-trailer collided along Mississippi Highway 8. According to Channel 5 News, authorities say the accident happened when a tractor-trailer sideswiped one of the buses and then hit another one head on as the two vehicles brought a group of 60 students home from visiting the University of Mississippi. The driver of the tractor-trailer was killed on impact, along with a a couple instructors who were accompanying the students.
