FDA Issues Recall For Defective Implantable Defibrillator

October 8, 2012

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a recall on a defective medical device used to monitor heart rhythms. According to a press release from the agency, the recall on the Riata and Riata ST implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), manufactured by St. Jude Medical, Inc., was issued after several faults were found on the leads connected to the device.

The defective product was marketed until the end of November of last year. The company halted marketing of the devices, but by that time, they had already been implanted in more than 227,000 patients. Around 79,000 patients in the United States still have the devices implanted.

While the device should last approximately 10 years, imaging has shown the insulation around conductors corroding and deteriorating in as little as four years. This could lead to a malfunction in the ICD that can result in abnormal sensing or pacing and could result in death from inappropriate electrical impulses.

Patients who still have the devices implanted have been instructed to be monitored closely by their doctors by having the device imaged around every six months to ensure everything is working properly.

The Memphis Personal Injury Lawyers with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers say medical device manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their products before they go to market. We are here to help if you or a loved one have suffered because of a faulty medical device.

Cold Therapies Capable Of Causing Serious Damage

May 21, 2012

One vital part of many injured patients’ recovery process is known as cryotherapy, or the use of extremely cold compresses to help heal damaged tissues. These sessions though, if not monitored closely, can cause serious bodily harm. Because most of these devices do not have a temperature regulators and many patients have been desensitized to pain from their injuries or surgeries in the areas of the body that are being treated, these treatments can often lead to tissue and nerve damage, normally resulting in cold burns or frostbite.

Another reason doctors are treating numerous cases of tissue and nerve damage caused from the cold is because of a dare that teenagers are challenging one another to.

According to an article from NBC-10 News, the dare is called the salt and ice challenge and tests participants’ threshold of pain by wetting the skin, sprinkling salt on the spot, and then holding and pressing an ice cube to the area until it melts or the challenger can no longer take the pain. There have been numerous reports form parents of children suffering cold burns and what appear to be large bruises. These bruises are actually dead soft tissue.

Cold Therapy Nerve Damage can happen in as short a period as twenty minutes. That is why the Tennessee Defective Product Lawyers with John Michael Bailey suggest removing cold compresses every quarter of an hour or so.

Somerville Tennessee Ultralight Plane Crash Leaves Pilot Dead

December 12, 2011

One man is dead following a deadly plane accident that occurred in Somerville, Tennessee. According to Channel 3 News, the crash occurred at around 2:00 in the afternoon on Sunday near Yum Yum road.

The owner of the plane and the private airstrip where it took off, told investigators the plane had undergone some maintenance that day and was on a test flight when it went down with the 50-year-old pilot from Cordova, Tennessee, inside. Witnesses say the plane took off in a normal fashion, but began to shake just above the tree line. They say the plane held on for a few seconds before going down in a nose dive position.

Several area farmers who saw the plane go down were able to quickly get to the wreckage and pulled the pilot away just as the plane set fire from a fuel leak. Despite their best efforts, rescuers were not able to revive the pilot.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was on the scene shortly after the crash to gather information and take pictures, but the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken over the investigation and says a preliminary report on the incident will be ready in several weeks.
