Memphis Police Officer Arrested For Drunk Driving Accident

January 30, 2012

If anyone should know the dangers of drunk driving, it’s a police officer. Yet sometimes they are still the ones on the wrong side of the law when it comes to drunk driving. According to reports by WMCTV-5 News, a Memphis police officer has been arrested in connection to an early morning drunk driving accident.

Officers with the Memphis Police Department responded to a call of a single vehicle crash at around 3:15 Monday morning at the intersection of American Way and Perkins.

It was there that they found the drunk police officer. He had driven his vehicle off the road and down an embankment, where he then hit a concrete barrier. Luckily, the driver only suffered minor injuries.

The officer has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Thousands of people are injured and killed by drunk driving every year in our country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that an estimated 10,389 people lost their lives in 2009 to alcohol related crashes, accounting for roughly one-third of all traffic related deaths in the United States that year.

It is because of the dangers that drunk driving can present to all motorists that the Memphis DUI Victim Lawyers with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers ask that you not get behind the wheel after drinking. It is much safer for everyone to call a cab or a friend to get you home safely.

Greenfield Construction Worker Killed In Building Collapse

January 23, 2012

One construction worker was killed and another injured on-the-job today in Greenfield, Tennessee, after the building the two men were working in collapsed. According to reports from WMCTV 5 News, the accident happened at around 9:30 this morning on Front Street.

Greenfield City Fire Chief Bob Dudley said that the pair of men were working in a lot adjacent to the building when it collapsed. The workers were buried by falling debris and suffered numerous injuries as a result. One of the victims was taken to The Med in Memphis, Tennessee, to be treated for the injuries he sustained. The other man, a 32-year-old man from Greenfield, was killed in the accident. Rescuers said it would take several hours to free the body from the fallen debris.

Dudley said that he believes the high winds from last night associated with a passing storm may have played a part in the building collapsing.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the construction industry is the most dangerous job in in the United States today. They estimate that in the U.S., approximately 751 workers lost their lives during on-the-job accidents last year alone.

The Memphis wrongful death attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers would like to remind all construction workers that employers have a responsibility to provide all employees with a safe work environment. If they do not, they may be able to be held liable for any injuries or deaths that occur.

Alcohol Blamed On Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash In Knox County

January 16, 2012

Alcohol is being blamed as the cause of a single vehicle accident that took the life of a 54-year-old man Sunday afternoon in eastern Knox County. According to reports from the Knoxville News Sentinel, the crash happened at approximately 5:18 PM on Strawberry Plains Pike, near Perry Road.

Deputies with the Knox county sheriff’s department who responded to the scene of the crash stated that the 54-year-old victim was killed when the driver of Chevrolet Blazer lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip several times. The two other men who were in the vehicle at the time of the crash survived and were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville to receive treatment for their injuries.

Deputies stated that alcohol was found in the vehicle following the crash. Investigators are still awaiting toxicology reports and are working to determine cause and fault in the crash.

The organization, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), says that this year alone, 10,839 people–or one person every 50-minutes–will die as a result of an alcohol-related accident in the United States.

This is why the Tennessee auto accident attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers encourage drivers to not drink and drive. The risk of injury or death to yourself and others around you is far too great. If you have had too much to drink, call a friend or taxi to get you home safely.

Tennessee Teen’s Death Sparks Highway Safety Concerns

January 9, 2012

The family of an 18-year-old Covington, Tennessee, teen is asking state transportation officials to make changes to the intersection on Highway 51 where he was hit and killed last Friday night. According to WMCTV 5 News, the young man was crossing the street after leaving a store at around 6:30 PM Friday when he was hit by a truck.

Numerous residents and business owners in the area testified to how dangerous the area can be because of heavy traffic from a nearby residential area and a blind spot in the highway. Many area residents can attest to the traffic increase that has occurred because of the development of a 50-60 home residential area nearby. The heavy traffic is only complicated by a hill in the road that can cause drivers to be blinded to what may be in the road on the other side. On-sight tests confirmed just how difficult it would be for a speeding driver to stop for an object in the road by showing it took an average of only eight seconds for a car to reach the accident sight after cresting the hill.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has vowed to do a traffic study of the intersection to determine what could be done to make it safer.

The Tennessee personal injury attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers say the best way to ensure your safety when crossing the street is to always use a crosswalk, look both ways twice before crossing, and wear light colored or reflective clothing after dark.

Memphis Man Arrested for DUI With Children in the Back Seat

January 2, 2012

A Memphis Tennessee, man was arrested last Wednesday for DUI with his two children in the backseat of the car. According to Channel 3 News, the accident occurred on the off ramp of I-240 at Getwell.

Officers say they found the man in his car parked in the wrong lane of the exit ramp. He appeared to be intoxicated as he explained that he had ran out of gas and pushed the vehicle to that point. The man failed sobriety tests at more than twice the legal limit to be driving. It was then that officers found the man’s one and two-year-old children in the backseat of the vehicle.

A background search on the man found that he had been arrested on charges of DUI about a month prior to the incident.

The US Department of Health and Human Services says that 37 percent of all fatal traffic accidents are in some way related to alcohol. They estimate that nearly 2,000 individuals lost their lives in 2009 to alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents. The good news–these kinds of accidents have been on a steady decline over the last twenty years.

The Memphis DUI victim attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers encourage motorists to keep Tennessee highways safe by never getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking. The decision could not only save you the estimated $10,000 in fines and fees a DUI will cost you, but could save a life.
