Memphis Drunk Driver Charged In Connection With Crash That Killed Four

December 26, 2011

A Memphis family is coping with loss after a car accident on Christmas Eve took four family members’ lives. According to The Commercial Appeal, the driver who caused the crash has been arrested and charged in connection to his part in the deaths and the wreck.

Deputies with the Shelby county sheriff’s department say that the accident happened at 6:30 in the evening on Raleigh-Millington Road as the four women returned from visiting a ill relative in the hospital. The women were stopped at a light when their 2002 Chevy Impala was rear-ended by a Chevy Silverado pickup. The collision caused the Impala to go out into the intersection, where it was T-boned by a Ford F-150 pickup.

The four women were trapped inside the vehicle, and were pronounced dead at the scene. The two individuals who were in the Ford pickup were severely injured and were taken to Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where one of them is listed in stable condition.

Deputies determined the 38-year-old driver of the Silverado was intoxicated at the time of the crash and was charged with four counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, reckless driving, speeding, and two counts of felony reckless endangerment.

FDA Considering Banning Certain Painkillers Containing Acetaminophen

December 19, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a ban on the two painkillers, Percocet and Vicodin, because of concerns regarding the amount of acetaminophen in the drugs. According to Health Central, acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver failure in the United States today.

The recommendation came to the agency through an advisory committee that examined the links between the amount of acetaminophen patients take and the occurrence of liver failure in those patients. Based on their findings, researchers are recommending that dosages for acetaminophen be lowered from 1,000 mg to 640 mg per tablet. Also, the current daily limit would be lowered form 4,000 mg to 2,600 mg per day. They are also asking the agency to ban painkillers that combine acetaminophen with other painkillers.

Acetaminophen is widely used in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) products to reduce pain and fever. It is also one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States. OTC products containing acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) are not affected by this action, but information regarding the potential for liver injury is already required on the label for OTC products containing acetaminophen. The FDA is continuing to evaluate ways to reduce the risk of acetaminophen-related liver injury from OTC products.

The Memphis Drug Injury Lawyers with John Michael Bailey would encourage anyone who is taking a medication containing acetaminophen to examine how much you take per day to ensure you are within safety guidelines. If you are taking more than 2,600 mg per day of acetaminophen, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor immediately.

Somerville Tennessee Ultralight Plane Crash Leaves Pilot Dead

December 12, 2011

One man is dead following a deadly plane accident that occurred in Somerville, Tennessee. According to Channel 3 News, the crash occurred at around 2:00 in the afternoon on Sunday near Yum Yum road.

The owner of the plane and the private airstrip where it took off, told investigators the plane had undergone some maintenance that day and was on a test flight when it went down with the 50-year-old pilot from Cordova, Tennessee, inside. Witnesses say the plane took off in a normal fashion, but began to shake just above the tree line. They say the plane held on for a few seconds before going down in a nose dive position.

Several area farmers who saw the plane go down were able to quickly get to the wreckage and pulled the pilot away just as the plane set fire from a fuel leak. Despite their best efforts, rescuers were not able to revive the pilot.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was on the scene shortly after the crash to gather information and take pictures, but the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken over the investigation and says a preliminary report on the incident will be ready in several weeks.

Bus and Tractor-Trailer Collisions Leave Three Dead And Dozens Injured

December 5, 2011

A string of crashes involving school buses and tractor-trailers in the Mississippi-area have left several people dead and dozen injured. Channel 3 News reported the latest crash after a school bus collided with a logging truck in Winona, Mississippi.

The accident occurred shortly after 7:00 in the morning at the intersection of US Highway 82 and Lodi Road. The bus was t-boned by the tractor-trailer as it passed through the intersection. The impact caused the bus to flip before coming to rest on its side. Witnesses said that all 20 students aboard the bus were injured and are being treated at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital, while three other requiring more serious treatment were taken to University Medical Center in Jackson.

The crash came in the wake of a similar incident that occurred earlier in the year, in which three people were killed and 10 others were injured when a school bus and tractor-trailer collided along Mississippi Highway 8. According to Channel 5 News, authorities say the accident happened when a tractor-trailer sideswiped one of the buses and then hit another one head on as the two vehicles brought a group of 60 students home from visiting the University of Mississippi. The driver of the tractor-trailer was killed on impact, along with a a couple instructors who were accompanying the students.
