Crash Claims Life of Memphis Drunk Driving Accident Victim

June 17, 2013

A man was killed and another was placed under arrest following a Memphis drunk driving accident that happened over this past weekend. Records show the crash happened at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of East Raines Road and Elvis Presley Boulevard.

The Memphis Drunk Driving Victim was traveling through the intersection when a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver failed to yield the right of way. The victim did not have time to move out of the way and the two vehicles collided.

According to a story from WREG 3 News, the drunk driver told police he had just left a nightclub where he had consumed several alcoholic drinks. He stated that he was at fault for the accident because he had fallen asleep while at the wheel of his vehicle. Police were later able to determine he was, in fact, over the legal blood-alcohol limit at the time of the accident and placed him under arrest for DUI and Vehicular Homicide.

The crash highlights the dangers posed by drunk drivers and leaves many wondering what the government is doing to curb the problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called for the legal blood alcohol limit to be dropped from .08 percent to .05 percent. They have also recommended any motorist caught driving drunk be required to install an ignition interlock system on their vehicle.

The Memphis Personal Injury Lawyers with John Michael Bailey hope these recommendations will be implemented to reduce drunken driving accidents in Tennessee.

June 10, 2013

A Memphis Car Accident that occurred earlier today was responsible for claiming the life of an elderly woman and leaving a 6-month old child with injuries. Reports indicate the crash happened at around 7:30 a.m. on Tutwiler in Pelican Gardens, located on the east side of the city.

According to an article published by The Commercial Appeal stated the elderly woman had just moved to the neighborhood to help care for the child. She was loading the child into a vehicle in the garage of her residence when a pickup truck plowed through the home’s fence and into its garage. Meanwhile, the young child was trapped in the wreckage and upon extrication, was rushed to a local hospital to receive further treatment for injuries sustained in the crash.

Memphis Car Accident Highlights The Importance Of Child Restraint Systems

June 3, 2013

Five children were left injured as the result of a Memphis Car Accident that occurred several weeks ago. Reports indicate the crash happened at approximately 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17, at the intersection of Hawkins Mill and New Allen Roads in the Raleigh section of town.

According to an article published in The Commercial Appeal, the collision resulted in seven ambulances being dispatched to the scene. Those vehicles then transported five children to local hospitals to receive treatment for injuries they sustained in the crash. One of the children, an 18-month-old, was later listed as being in critical condition.

The accident highlights the need for parents to be educated on the importance of properly restraining children in motor vehicles.

Standard seatbelts in vehicles are designed with adults in mind, not children. That is why the law requires all children to be restrained in a child booster or safety seat. Children under the age of 1 must be placed in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system in the rear seat. When the child is between 1 and 3 years old, they can be placed in a forward-facing restraint system in the rear seat of the vehicle. Children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old must be seated in a child booster seat.

The Memphis Personal Injury Lawyers with John Michael Bailey encourage all parents to double check the installation of their safety seats as well.

Three Killed In Two Separate Tennessee Boat Accidents

May 20, 2013

Warm weather in May tends to bring more boats onto the waterways of Tennessee, and this year has been no exception. With the increase in boating volume comes an increase in the number of accidents involving watercrafts. Again, this year has been no exception, considering three people have been killed as the result of two separate Tennessee Boat Accidents that occurred on the waters of Reelfoot Lake this month.

The first accident occurred on May 1 after two boaters were trying to get off the lake before a storm hit. As they made their way to shore, they struck a submerged log, which caused the boat to flip. Both men died as a result of the crash.

Then, on May 9, Channel 3 News reported that a man died after high winds flipped his vessel.

Such accidents have many boaters wondering what they can do to reduce their chances of being involved in an accident while on the water. Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency explain that having a life preserver for every person on board a boat is the best way to ensure safe travel. Just having them on board is not enough though. Boaters should have a life preserver on at all times when the vessel is in motion.

The Tennessee Personal Injury Lawyers with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers hope this tip will help to keep boaters safe while on the water this summer!

May 13, 2013

A former police officer has been charged in connection to a Memphis Car Accident he caused that claimed the lives of two others. Reports indicate the crash happened at around 2:45 p.m. at the corner of Walnut and Crump on August 26 of last year.

Witnesses stated that the officer was driving at a high rate of speed and was traveling without his sirens or emergency lights activated when he entered the intersection and collided with a 1996 Mercury Mystique. According to an article published by the Clarion Ledger, the impact of the collision killed the 54-year-old driver of the Mercury and her 13-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the vehicle.

The officer was relieved of duty after an internal investigation into the incident found he had not followed department procedures in both personal conduct and responding to calls. He was criminally charged in connection with the incident last week and could face a sentence of several years in prison if convicted on the charges.

The Memphis Personal Injury Attorneys with John Michael Bailey are aware of how the loss of a loved one to an accident caused by another’s negligence can drastically affect numerous lives. Motorcycle Awareness Foundation Names May “Motorcycle Awareness Month” In TN

May 6, 2013

With warmer weather arriving in Tennessee, the number of motorcyclists on the state’s highways is beginning to rise as well. With the greater number of motorcyclists on the road though, experts say the state can expect to begin seeing more Tennessee Auto Accidents involving these machines.

So far this year, a total of 19 motorcyclists have died as the result of accidents. Memphis ranked among one of the most dangerous metropolitan areas in the state for motorcyclists, while towns like Maryville and Clarksville also recorded a high number of deadly collisions.

In an effort to curb these numbers, the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation has named May “Motorcycle Awareness Month” throughout the state. The organization explained in an article from WBBJ 7 News that the campaign is not only aimed at making motorists more aware of motorcyclists riding around them, but also at educating bikers on how to be safer riders. Several free motorcycle safety courses will be offered throughout the month as part of the program.

The first course will take place on May 16 at Liberty Tech High School, while the second event will occur at South Side High School. All bikers of any experience level are welcomed to attend the event.

The Memphis Personal Injury Attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers recognize the importance of educating the public about motorcycle awareness. The firm hopes the campaign is successful in reducing the number of accidents involving these vehicles.

Mississippi Drunk Driving Accident Leaves Teen Seriously Injured

April 29, 2013

A Mississippi Drunk Driving Accident that occurred this past week was responsible for leaving an 18-year-old female pedestrian seriously injured. Reports indicate the crash happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. last Friday night, near the intersection of Bradford Street and Martin Luther King Street in the city of Rosedale.

An article from The Bolivar Commercial stated that the woman was attempting to cross the street at the intersection when a 54-year-old male driver failed to yield the right-of-way in his vehicle and the two collided. The impact of the crash left the woman with serious injuries that required she be airlifted to a Memphis hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the driver who was responsible for the crash told responding officers that he simply did not see the pedestrian in the road. A further investigation was able to determine the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was placed under arrest and charged with DUI and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

The accident has left many citizens wondering what they can do to help prevent such a collision. The Tupelo Personal Injury Attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers say one way is for motorists to never get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol. Pedestrians can also make themselves more visible to drivers by wearing light-colored or reflective clothing when walking.

Tennessee Construction Accident Leaves Two Dead And Another Injured

April 22, 2013

A Tennessee Construction Accident that occurred last week was responsible for claiming the lives of two workers and leaving another man seriously injured. Reports indicate the incident occurred just before 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at a site located on Indian Lake Boulevard in the town of Hendersonville.

A story published in a recent issue of The Tennessean explained the three men were part of crew hired by two subcontractors to complete a wall in a new building. As the three men worked though, the wall suddenly gave way and came crashing down on top of them.

The victim’s co-workers described the sound of the collapse as being similar to a dynamite explosion. They quickly began to pull the debris away from the victims once they realized what had occurred; however, two of the victims died before rescue crews could arrive at the scene. The other man was rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment for several serious injuries.

The Tennessee Occupational Safety & Health Administration has sent a team of investigators to the scene to determine if the accident could have been prevented. The team stated they believe the accident may have occurred when a gust of wind blew the wall over.

The Memphis Personal Injury Attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers recognize the devastation the sudden loss of a loved one can cause. That’s why the firm would like to send their sympathies to the families of the two workers who were killed.

Risks Associated With Traumatic Brain Injuries

April 8, 2013

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1.7 million people are the victims of serious head injuries each year. An article from The Commercial Appeal discussed the dangers of such injuries and what a person should do if an injury of this nature occurs.

Data shows that children, the elderly, and users of drugs or alcohol are among the groups of individuals most likely to suffer a serious head injury. Slips, trip, and falls account for roughly 35 percent of all head injuries. Traffic accidents also account for a large portion of these injuries, with experts estimating around 17 percent of head injuries being caused by car crashes. Collisions with heavy objects are responsible for around the same number of injuries.

Sustaining a blow to the head can result in numerous negative health effects. One of the greatest concerns when a person suffers a blow to the head though, is the risk of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A TBI can result in symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Memory Loss
  • Slurred Speech
  • Sensitivity to Light or Sound
  • Disruption of Sleep Patterns

If a head injury is suspected, experts say it is important to follow the ABC’s of head injuries. First, assess the situation. Then, be alert for symptoms of an injury. Finally, get checked out by a doctor.

The Memphis Personal Injury Attorneys with John Michael Bailey Injury Lawyers hope these tips help to keep citizens safe from the dangers head injuries can pose.
